Mobilaris, Axians & TPO join forces to improve safety at Veidekke’s underground project

How do you ensure safety and control in complex, constantly evolving underground environments — with up to 400 people working there every day?

That was the challenge facing Veidekke, one of Scandinavia’s largest contractors, in one of Stockholm’s most complex underground infrastructure projects. Traditional, manual safety routines simply weren’t enough. Veidekke needed a reliable way to gain real-time awareness of the operations below ground –  making it possible to instantly locate personnel and assets, and thereby respond quickly to incidents or unexpected events.

To meet the demands of this high-risk environment — where visibility is low and the dark tunnel networks are constantly expanding, and even minor disruptions can escalate quickly — Veidekke turned to Mobilaris, Axians and TPO for a collaborative digital safety solution.

Since 2018, the joint solution has become a trusted part of Veidekke’s underground operations – keeping people safe and work moving.

“I am very pleased with the results and the collaboration with Axians, Mobilaris and TPO. At the slightest issue, they come to the site quickly and develop new technical solutions based on our needs. We have felt safe in the tunnels the entire time,” says Ulf Wallin, Safety Manager at Veidekke.

Three specialists – one proven safety solution

To meet Veidekke’s needs, Mobilaris, Axians, and TPO joined forces to deliver a seamlessly integrated safety system. The solution gives Veidekke’s safety managers a real-time location overview of people and assets underground, all in a user-friendly visual interface. In the event of an incident, they can respond within seconds — keeping workers safe and minimizing disruptions.

The collaboration brings together three key areas of expertise:

  • Mobilaris provides real-time positioning software with underground visualization and emergency support function.
  • Axians delivers the mission-critical network and communications infrastructure
  • TPO handles installation and ongoing maintenance in the demanding and constantly expanding environments.

Together, the companies offer an integrated and proven solution that boosts both safety and efficiency — without requiring the customer to coordinate multiple suppliers or manage complex technical integrations.

From limited visibility to fast, data-driven decision-making

Traditionally, underground operations have had limited means of knowing where personnel, equipment and vehicles are located. Companies have often relied on manual, time-consuming coordination and made decisions based on assumptions.

With the combined safety solution from Axians, Mobilaris and TPO, Veidekke now has clear real-time visibility of personnel and equipment throughout the tunnel network. Through an clear visual interface, safety managers can quickly detect deviations and respond immediately. All personal data is only unlocked in emergency situations.

Beyond improving safety, the solution also improves workflows by providing better visibility of equipment, vehicles and machines. In addition, operational downtime is reduced thanks to a robust, customised infrastructure designed to function reliably in harsh environments.

Underground environments rank among the most high-risk workplaces in sectors such as infrastructure and mining

Preparing complex work environments for the future

The need for data-driven safety solutions is rapidly increasing as underground environments become more extensive and technologically advanced. Axians, Mobilaris and TPO demonstrate how established technology and close collaboration can create safer, more efficient workplaces – paving the way for the next stage of digital development underground
